What happens during the test
- The plumber dye tests the sinks, laundry tubs, floor drains, showers and toilets inside the house.
- Outside, the plumber dye tests roof leaders, stairwell drains and driveway drains to confirm none of them run into the sanitary sewer.
- The plumber checks for a sump pump and where it discharges, and locates the cleanouts and fresh air vent.
- A camera goes through the sewer lateral. The color video must be clear and well lit, and it goes to the Sewer Department with the report.
If the test fails
If the test fails, the Township requires the entire lateral to be replaced or relined to the Allegheny County Plumbing Code. One spot repair is allowed only if the lateral is all PVC or ABS pipe with no other structural defects. A repair plan is filed with the Allegheny County Health Department Plumbing Division, and a Sewer Department representative must inspect the work before the certificate is issued. Call the Sewer Department at 412-279-4941.
